Good Old Fashion Comfort

I've been in a bad mental state lately, and I need to do stuff to get me out of this funk. I'm probably sad because I'm going to be graduating soon and I'm not too certain about my future. However, I realized that a lot of soon to be college grads are feeling bummed out now, so I created a list of things to comfort you:

1. Watch comedy shows and movies or read a book. Nothing makes me more happy than watching a funny episode of The Simpsons or reruns of Seinfeld. I also love watching Freaks and Geeks, 30 Rock, Scrubs, and The Office. Movie wise, I enjoy Judd Apatow films, such as Knocked Up or Superbad. I'm a big Paul Rudd fan, so any movie with him cheers me up too. Watching something funny is a great way to de-stress and just let things slide for a moment. Reading an all time favorite book is a relaxing activity too. I love to read To Kill A Mockingbird, the Harry Potter books, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Huck Finn, and Eugene O'Neill plays.

2. Exercise. Another great thing to do is go out for a run or walk. When I go out for a run, I tend to get in a mind frame where everything is serene. It's a great activity for your mental and physical state. Now that it's nice outside, you can really enjoy the scenery outside!

3. Shop, shop, shop. I love shopping. Going to the mall and shopping for clothes is a nice way to pamper yourself. Forever 21, H&M, Nordstroms, and Charlotte Rousse are just a few of my favorite places. I also love buying things for my apartment. I go to Target a lot and buy little things, such as cute magnets, fun kitchen utensils, charming cups, etc. Sometimes, these little gifts can really cheer you up. Shopping for others is great too. I love it when a friend really loves a gift I got for them. Nothing makes me happier.

4. Clean. Whenever I am in a funk, my apartment is usually a mess. (I guess there is a strong correlation between the two things. ) Completely cleaning every corning of your room, kitchen, living room, etc is a nice way to occupy your time. And it will make you feel great to know that you're home is clean and organized, which can possibly help your mental states to be clean and organized.

5. Socialize more. Go out with friends. Friends are there to comfort you so let them know that something is bothering you. Sometimes getting dressed up and going out to a club or lounge is what you really need.

6. Take a vacation. As a college student, I don't really have a lot of places I can escape to. But since I live near New York City, sometimes I go there, by myself, for the day. It feels good to go walking around and visiting some of my favorite places. I love going to the Met and MoMA museums. I love architecture a lot so I often go see the old brownstone buildings and other historic places. If the weather is nice, then go for a stroll around Central Park. One of my favorite spots is the South Street Seaport because they have a great view of the Brooklyn Bridge. The possibilities of things to do and see are endless in New York.

7. Listen to Up beat Music. Music is a big enabler of moods. So, listen to happy music instead of sad songs. It will cheer you up!

8. Volunteer. Go to your local hospital or community center and help out the helpless. You'll feel better knowing that you are had a positive effect in someone's life. There are so many places that really would love to have volunteers, so get out there!

9. Do something that you were once passionate about. Did you used to love playing the guitar but stopped suddenly? Well, now is the time to restart that hobby. If you are feeling bad, then think of a time when you were happy and try to reenact that. For example, do you have a friend that you used to hang out with but don't anymore? Go out and contact them and see how they are. If you like to write, then make time in your day to write. Just do something you really love or if you never were truly interested in something, then you should go out and find a hobby.

If you have more comforting ideas, let me know. It's nice to help each other out!
