Starting a diet, I wonder how this will go…

During my senior year of college, I gained about twenty pounds that I really wish I didn’t. I know that it is my own fault because I partied a lot and ate unhealthily. I had an erratic sleep pattern, which made me eat at 2 or 3 in the morning. I also had a lot of stress because I was taking high level classes, working, uncertain about my future, and looking to start a career. But now I graduated and I am feeling much less stressed. (Although, I still haven’t gotten a job. L) Now that I have a lot of time on my hands, I’m going to attempt to lose the weight I gained last year. And this is how I plan to do it (this is common sense, really):

1. No more sugar. Anyone who knows me knows that I love candy, especially chocolate. I’m going to try to stop eating these bad sugars. I know I probably can’t stop cold turkey, so I am allowing myself only one SMALL piece of candy per day. And hopefully, I will stop having the need to eat sugar. I heard that if you stop or limit your sugar intake then it will help get rid of belly fat – and this is my main problem area.

2. No more fast food. This was the main reason I gained a lot of weight last year. I completely stopped cooking for myself and relied upon the greasy pizza places, hamburger joints, and other non-healthy restaurants that are nearby my college. Now I have a lot of free time, so I am going back to cooking for myself. Whenever I cook for myself, I cook healthy foods, such as baked chicken breast, brown rice, stir fried vegetables, sandwich melts, and etc. Even cooking a burger at home is healthier than getting at McDonald’s or Burger King because A.) I don’t cook it in oil, B.) It’s not a huge burger, C.) I don’t eat it with a large soda and fries, and D.) I don’t put lots of sauces on it.

3. Exercise more often. I used to exercise a lot. I would go to the gym at least 5 times a week. I loved using the elliptical and I would be on it for at least an hour. However, last year, I barely went to the gym (even though I lived right behind it!). I think I didn’t go because of my diet. My bad diet made me really lazy. Now that I am changing my diet, I am getting my energy back. I started running again, doing crunches, and stretching. I’ve been doing this for about a week now, and I hope I have made it a routine again.

4. Change of attitude. All last year, I know that I was gaining weight. My attitude to this was that I always had tomorrow to start getting in shape or that I was busy with school work and shouldn’t worry about my weight right now. Now, my attitude has changed and I make myself more aware of my choices. Having a good attitude really is the key to losing weight because if you cannot motivate yourself than nothing else will get you going.

5. Sleep. As I said before, I had a very erratic sleeping pattern. Now I'm not partying anymore and I am going to sleep before midnight. I wake up refreshed in the morning and I have a lot more energy and concentration for the day. This is a crucial factor for losing weight.

These are just simply steps but I hope it works! It really depends on my determination and will power to get to my goal. Hopefully by the end of the summer, I’ll have lost the twenty pounds I gained.
